New Year’s Eve

by Lindsey Eck

I saw your car in the lot
You didn’t answer my knock
Guess I’m all out of luck
I can’t believe you forgot
about the bargain we struck
I’m easily bought
At least I still have my truck
so I circled your block
till I spent my last buck

I painted everything green
with a melony sheen
You said you wanted it black
so I adopted your scheme
until you wanted it back
I ran the machine
while you ran off the track
Now you’re the girl of your dreams
I’m just the man with the facts

Baby,
I understand
you had a change of plans
but did you have to leave
on New Year’s Eve?
I’m cold and I’m bored
It’s more than I can afford
Why did you have to leave
on New Year’s Eve?

Now, you still haven’t played
the last record I made
All those loud, loud voices
wonder would you have stayed
if I’d made better choices
You found a parade
and made your own loud noises
So who was betrayed
in all our compromises?

Baby,
I understand
I’m no longer your man
but did you have to leave
on New Year’s Eve?
I’m drunk and I’m tired
and I can’t light a fire
Why did you have to leave
on New Year’s?

I understand
you had a change of plans
but did you have to leave
on New Year’s Eve?
I’m cold and I’m bored
It’s more than I can afford
I can’t believe you’d leave
on New Year’s Eve
